WIGWAM GOLF CLUB - GOLD COURSE (623-935-3811)
Arizona Golf Course Review
General Information
A golf experience at the Wigwam Golf Resort & Spa in Litchfield - northwest of Phoenix/Scottsdale, features three championship courses which are the centerpiece of a full scale
luxury resort. Golf stay and play packages can be booked through the resort, which provides upscale accommodations, a full service Red Door Spa, and all the amenities,
recreational opportunities and dining experiences worthy of a classic resort. The golf club recently completed over 5 million dollars in renovations, restoring the grandeur to its two
signature courses - the Gold and Patriot "Blue", and developing one of the southwest's premier practice facilities. For more info on the resort, click here to visit the Wigwam
website.
The original layout at Wigwam was designed in the 1930's, and the current layouts remain true to traditional golf, with generous fairways flanked and crossed by canals, lakes and
streams that provide both challenge and aesthetics. The Patriot "Blue" and Gold are Robert Trent Jones Sr. designs, and together with the more recently designed Heritage "Red"
Course, provide 54 holes of pure golf that offer diversity and playability that separate this resort from others in the state. With the renovations came the addition of the Wigwam Golf
University that includes the Jim McLean golf School. Practice facilities include a 350 foot wide duel ended driving range, target greens, and three separate greens for putting,
chipping and pitching. Dubbed the "Village Green", this facility is state of art and is among the largest in Arizona.
The clubhouse at Wigwam features a full service golf shop offering the finest in golf apparel and equipment, with a staff that is expert at organizing and servicing corporate and
group outings. There is an adjacent restaurant that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
GOLD COURSE
The Gold Course at Wigwam was added to the property in the 1960's - and at the time was considered to be the West Coast Version of the relentless South Course at Firestone.
Originally a Robert Trent Jones design, this layout was updated recently by Forrest Richardson. Playing to over 7400 yards, this par 72 course is long and winding with four sets of
tees that play to distances and slopes measuring 7430 yards/135 slope, 6830 yards/130 slope, 6348 yards/125 slope and 5885 yards with a slope of 119 from the forward sets.
This experience is ideal for long hitters - as even those playing from the Club or white tees will have to negotiate almost 6400 yards.
The Gold was recently renovated with new bunker and green complexes, some lengthening to holes, plus a new design to the finishing hole which is now a formidable par four
and the # 6 handicap. Additionally, some of the green complexes now include stone retaining walls. The course was in especially beautiful condition on our mid-December visit.
On course yardage markers are posted on the fairways and cart paths at 100, 150 and 200 yards, and sprinkler heads are also measured to the center of the green. Pin
placement cards are mounted on the carts, providing info on the day's hole locations. Like the Red Course, the Gold has an outstanding set of finishing holes, culminating in a par
four that demands a carry across a water hazard off the tee, with a canal resting near the edge of the green complex that creates a demanding approach. In total, water comes into
play on 10 holes and 82 sand bunkers are situated along the fairways or greenside.
This is a beautiful golf course, with abundant palms and fine landscaping. Golfers will appreciate the new look! Great stay and play packages featuring this course along with the
Patriot "Blue" and Heritage "Red" are available. For more information on the golf course, visit our page for the property, with direct link to the Wigwam website by clicking here.
