WIGWAM GOLF CLUB PATRIOT "BLUE" COURSE (623-935-3811)
Arizona Golf Course Review
General Information
A golf experience at the Wigwam Golf Resort & Spa in Litchfield - northwest of Phoenix/Scottsdale, features three championship courses which are the centerpiece of a full scale
luxury resort. Golf stay and play packages can be booked through the resort, which provides upscale accommodations, a full service Red Door Spa, and all the amenities,
recreational opportunities and dining experiences worthy of a classic resort. The golf club recently completed over 5 million dollars in renovations, restoring the grandeur to its two
signature courses - the Gold and Patriot "Blue", and developing one of the southwest's premier practice facilities. For more info on the resort, click here to visit the Wigwam
website.
The original layout at Wigwam was designed in the 1930's, and the current layouts remain true to traditional golf, with generous fairways flanked and crossed by canals, lakes and
streams that provide both challenge and aesthetics. The Patriot "Blue" and Gold are Robert Trent Jones Sr. designs, and together with the more recently designed Heritage "Red"
Course, provide 54 holes of pure golf that offer diversity and playability that separate this resort from others in the state. With the renovations came the addition of the Wigwam Golf
University that includes the Jim McLean golf School. Practice facilities include a 350 foot wide duel ended driving range, target greens, and three separate greens for putting,
chipping and pitching. Dubbed the "Village Green", this facility is state of art and is among the largest in Arizona.
The clubhouse at Wigwam features a full service golf shop offering the finest in golf apparel and equipment, with a staff that is expert at organizing and servicing corporate and
group outings. There is an adjacent restaurant that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
PATRIOT "BLUE" COURSE
The Patriot Course at the Wigwam is a Robert Trent Jones design that has been the "signature course" of the resort since its inception. While the course plays to just over 6000
yards, this par 70 layout can be challenging, with deep and perilous bunkers, strategic water hazards and many doglegs. There are four sets of tees that play to distances and
slopes measuring 6001 yards/123 slope, 5572 yards/117 slope, 5199 yards/113 slope and 4791 yards with a slope rating of 113 for ladies playing from the forward tees.
Recent renovations to the Patriot course include the re-structuring of hole number 5 into a par five, and new hole designs for numbers 14 through 18. Fourteen is a short par four
with a well bunkered green complex; fifteen is a par three with a stone walled green complex situated behind a pond; sixteen demands a carry over a canal off the tee and trees
and bunkers greenside that makes the approach on this par four a tough one, and 17 is another short par three over water. Mounds and bunkers on the long par four 18th make
this # 4 handicapped finishing hole an interesting one. Altogether, 70 sand bunkers come into play and water hazards on 7 holes also add to the aesthetic beauty and challenge of
this course.
The Patriot was created in the 1960's and is full of strategy and decision making. Along with the Gold Course, the Patriot was updated in 2005 by Arizona architect Forrest
Richardson. While improved, the course maintains the small raised green complexes, large bunkers and frequent doglegs - remaining true to its original character. Great stay and
play packages featuring this course along with the Gold and Heritage "Red" are available. For more information on the golf course, visit our page for the property, with direct link to
