Arizona Golf Course Review

MissionRoyale_0047w

Mission Royale Gof Club in Casa Grande (between Phoenix and Tucson) is a Greg Nash designed 6700 yard championship layout that is scenic, player friendly and affordable. This par 72 course plays to a top slope of 122 and course rating of 71.1, and presents some memorable risk-reward holes that can make or break a golf round. The fairly level terrain is supplemented with some significant water hazards, providing the need for strategic golf course management.

There are over 60 sand bunkers located along the fairways or greenside and water hazards come into play on two holes. The course winds through a residential community, with manicured desert areas constantly in view. As is the case with many Arizona courses, the Bermuda rough goes dormant over the winter providing a distinct color divide between the fairways and rough.

There are some forced carries off the tee and on approaches, but these shots are reasonable in length. The front nine plays over a fairly level terrain, while the back side presents more undulations and mild elevation changes. The medium sized putting surfaces are undulating and sometimes double tiered, with mounds and bunkers often protecting. There is usually plentiful room for error, and the desert areas are cleaned out enough that recoveries are possible.

Four sets of tees play to distances and slopes measuring 6700 yards/122 slope, 6151 yards/115 slope, 5536 yards/108 slope for men and 121 for women, and 4902 yards with a slope of 112 for ladies playing from the forward sets. Yardage markers are present on the fairways at 100, 150 and 200 yards, and color coded flags indicate front, middle and back hole locations. There is a grass range and putting green on property, and clubhouse facilities include pro shop plus restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch menus with dinners Thursday through Sunday.
