Poston Butte is one of the latest courses to open in the greater Phoenix/Scottsdale area, and is a Troon operated golf facility that offers one of the most
reasonably priced desert golf opportunities in the region (prices top out at $90 prime time in 2010). Located in the southeast valley of Phoenix, this Gary
Panks design is nestled in the newest Anthem master planned golf community, and features a quality golf experience with spectacular par threes featuring
an island green, stacked stone walls and sand bunkers that stretch from tee to green.
Forty nine strategically placed sand traps, varying in size and shape are situated near the landing zones or greenside, and water comes into play on two
holes, including the beautiful par three 17th which features the signature island green. Landscaped desert areas are consistently in play, and there are
several forced carries from tee boxes which are sculpted from the desert.
The course is player friendly, with wide fairways flanked by desert designed with bermuda grass (rye in the winter), and manicured Tif Dwarf putting
surfaces. There is ample room for driver off the tee, as 5 sets of tees play to distances and slopes measuring a formidable 7282 yards/127 slope, 6820
yards/125 slope, 6321 yards/123 slope, 5803 yards/122 slope and 5303 yards with a slope of 114 from the front tees.
On course yardage markers are posted on the cart paths and fairways every 50 yards from 200 in (250 on par fives), and sprinkler heads are also
measured to the center of the green on all par fours and fives. A daily pin placement sheet mounted on all carts provides information on the day's hole
locations.
On property is a clubhouse with pro shop, plus snack are serving breakfast and lunch items plus beverages. Practice facilities are comprehensive, and
include a double ended, targeted grass range, short game are for chipping and sand play plus 10,000 square foot putting green. Lessons of all types are
available.
Poston Butte is a little out of the way - but the fine conditions, service and interesting golf course set up make the trip worthwhile. Memberships are
