MARYVALE GOLF COURSE 866-865-GOLF(4653)
Arizona Golf Course Review
The municipality of Phoenix is the owner/operator of a nice variety of quality and value oriented 18-hole golf properties, including Papago, Maryvale,
Encanto Park, Cave Creek and Aguila golf courses. There also are three 9-hole layouts. Besides the fact that these courses are easily accessible, golfers
will also appreciate the pricing structure that makes a round on these properties a good value on an Arizona golf vacation. Visitors can click on the
following link, to find pricing and to book a tee time online at any of the Phoenix municipal golf facilities http:://phoenix.gov/golf.html
The photos in this review are of the Maryvale Golf Course, designed by William F Bell - creator of San Diego's fabled Torrey Pines golf course. Located on
W. Indian School Road, this course is frequent home to the Phoenix Open Qualifying, and features mature trees that line Bermuda fairways which are over
-seeded with rye grass in the fall. The dormant rough contrasted with the color of the greens and fairways provides a two-tone effect during winter months.
The topography is quite level, and the fairways are lined with native trees. Most holes present ample room off the tee, and the green complexes are
slightly raised, and often have sand traps on either side. The putting surfaces are large and often slope from back to front. In total, there are 37 sand
bunkers located near the landing zones or greenside, and water comes into play on seven holes.
Frequent doglegs bending in either direction provide a challenge for golfers of all skill levels, though as the slope ratings indicate, this is a very player
friendly layout that can be enjoyed by beginners and high handicappers. There are three sets of tees that play to distances and slopes measuring 6646
yards/119 slope, 6216 yards/115 slope, and 5664 yards with a slope of 113 from the front tees.
On property is a grass range, short game area with sand bunker, plus two putting greens. There also is a snack area/lounge serving hot and cold
sandwiches, beverages and other lunch items. On course yardage markers are provided at 100, 150 and 200 yards, and sprinkler heads are also
measured to the center of the green. Color coded flags indicate front, middle and back hole locations.
If you are going to be in Phoenix for awhile, the Phoenix card is available ($50 fee and $30 annual renewal for Maricopa County Residents and $100
annual fee for non-residents) and provides advance tee time reservations, discounted rates and promotional specials at all of the municipal courses. For
