JOHNSON RANCH GOLF CLUB (480-987-9800)
Arizona Golf Course Review 9/07/07
The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch is an 18-hole championship course that is situated at the base of the San Tan Mountains in Queen Creek (southeast of Phoenix). Designed by Kenny Watkins, this
challenging layout features a varying topography that includes a classic desert front nine, while the back side meanders through a majestic, cactus filled mountainside.
Throughout golfers will find generous Bermuda (rye overseed) fairways with lots of grass playing surface - surrounded by landscaped desert areas. The bent grass greens are generally raised and undulating,
with strategic bunkering nearby. There are openings in front of the green complexes, which results in accurately placed approaches being rewarded with good scoring opportunities.
The tips play to a resounding 7141 yards, which means there is ample opportunity to grip it and rip it -
especially on the front nine. These championship tees play to a slope of 137, proving low handicappers
with all they can handle. Alternate sets are much more playable, as they play to distances and slopes measuring 6639 yards/120 slop, 6204 114 slope for men and 126 for women, and 5367 yards with a
slope of 114 for ladies hitting from the forward tees.
There are 34 sand bunkers located near the landing zones off the tee or greenside, and water comes into play on two holes on the front side plus one on the back. On course yardage markers are positioned
on the fairways of all par fours and fives every 25 yards from 200 to 75 in. There also are 150 yard stakes, and the day's hole locations are indicated on the pin placement charts mounted on each cart.
On property is a clubhouse with pro shop and restaurant (with bar and outdoor patio) that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus banquet/outing facilities that can accommodate various sizes of
functions. There is a grass and practice green, with lessons, club fitting and rentals available. A swing monitoring system will be added soon.
