ASU KARSTEN GOLF CLUB (480) 921-8070
Arizona Golf Course Review 2/24/05
The ASU Karsten Golf Club in Tempe is the home course of Arizona State University, and is a traditional
Pete Dye links style design along rolling hills with scattered trees and abundant fairway and greenside mounding. Gorgeous mountain views are mixed with backdrops of the Sun Devil Stadium, as pictured in
the photograph below. Conveniently located near the ASU Campus and the Sky Harbor Airport, Karsten is the perfect round for the day of arrival or departure on an Arizona golf vacation.
Keep in mind the course utilizes the split tee system, with tee times scheduled on the back side for the
first two hours of each morning - meaning that those with the first tee times of the day will not necessarily
be able to get in a quick round. Golfers making the turn in 2 hours or less will be behind those that began
on the back side...The Karsten course was closed for renovation from mid-June to mid October 2004, allowing for a new irrigation system to be implemented. Great idea...on our late February AZ trip we
visited a couple dozen courses, and Karsten was perhaps the dryest of them all - despite 3 weeks of heavy rainfall.
On property at Karsten is a wonderful clubhouse featuring one of the nation's top on site golf shops, and
a beautiful restaurant/lounge that is immediately adjacent- serving full breakfast and lunch menus. There
also is a spacious patio with golf course views that can be utilized for golf outings and banquets. Practice facilities include a grass range with target areas towards the stadium, and a huge
putting/chipping green.
Golfers can choose from 4 sets of tees that play to yardages and slopes measuring 7057 yards/132 slope, 6314 yards/124 slope, 5709 yards/115 slope for men and 127 for women, and 4765 yards with a
slope of 103 for men and 115 for the ladies. This is a formidable challenge from the tips - as plentiful
mounds and swales on the sides of fairways require players to hit it straight. On course yardages are
marked on the cart paths (color coded), sprinkler heads and on the fairways at 100, 150 and 200 yards.
Color coded flags indicate front, middle and back pin placement on the large, mildly undulating putting
surfaces. Especially appreciated are the top of the line club carts, which provide separators for golf clubs, in dash compartments and ball & club washers.
Karsten is known for its exceptional service and conditioning - and is available for public play with
reasonable rates all year long. For more info, visit our page for the ASU Karsten Course with direct link to their website by clicking here.
